BetterTogether Campaign will drive Independence

Do you ever get the feeling that the very bunch tasked with preventing Scottish independence are the very ones who will make it come to fruition? After George Robertson’s embarrassing spoutings yesterday comparing a Yes vote with the end of the civilized world a further nail was driven into the coffin containing the chances of maintaining the union.

Today David Cameron missed a great chance to retain some semblance of credibility by not nailing Maria Miller’s arse to a cross and throwing Food Bank leftovers at it.

I used to think that the Better Togethers were some kind of Bilderberg group, plotting and scheming like Dr. Evil to preserve their slanted, morally corrupt and grossly unequal world. Now I’m beginning to believe that a large number of them are just plain stupid including head honcho Cameron.  Any idiot who claims to be in touch with the common man by referring to his wife’s attendance of “day school” really isn’t the full shilling.

So, BetterTogether, who have you got lined up next? Can’t wait to see.

Why so many are blind to inequality

As an engineer I like to understand how things work.  However maybe unlike many engineers I like to extend this curiosity beyond gadgets and other technical creations and apply it to such things as economics and politics.  These explorations in thought delving into these massively complex systems reveal some interesting results.  One, they are not hard science.  The Nobel Prize in Economics is not really a Nobel prize, being added later.  More importantly the reason economics is so apparently rife with inconsistencies and glaring inadequacies is that it is tied closely to the human character and base fears and desires.  Too little money can spell death through starvation, exposure or lack of medical treatment.  Too much money can be used to buy and sell other human beings; corruption, slavery.  Your viewpoint on these points directly influences your political and economic stance.

Over the years I have made many trips to India.  It’s almost a cliche but it there is no denying that few countries can incite such love / hate relationships as India.  I love it.  I hate it. India being a democracy does not hide its poverty.  On TV you do not see that just outside the walls of the iconic Taj Mahal are people living in shacks and drying cow Continue reading

Let’s Play Westminster Spot the Difference – Impossible

I’ve been struggling with this puzzle for the last few years.  Four pictures, all apparently different from each other but I’m damned if I can see any difference between the first three clowns.

spot-the-difference

In the UK with our backward first past the post voting system we’re stuck with only three national political parties that stand a chance in Westminster.  As Tony Blair clambered on to the rampaging Neo-Con bandwagon in the late 1990s any differences between these parties became increasingly fuzzy until Nick Clegg rammed a stake through the heart of Continue reading

Scotland Located Nowhere near England 410 Million Years Ago

Random piece of information I stumbled upon today: 410 million years ago Scotland and England were on different sides of a giant ocean.  If we could literally manage without the rest of the UK 410 million years ago then we can be an independent neighbour today…  No idea what that bollocks means, but stop being afraid of Project Fear dear Scots, who knows where Scotland will be in 410 million years from now.  Suddenly some fears about delayed pensions, Standard Life moving south, not being on the Security Council and missing Dr. Who have less impact…

Further thought for the day, why could we not have crashed into a more politically compatible lump of rock, say Scandinavia?

“Until 410 million years ago, the area of land now recognised as Scotland was separated from England by an ocean wider than the present-day North Atlantic – the Iapetus Ocean. When the two halves of Britain, which were part of separate larger continental land masses, began to drift towards each other, so the Iapetus Ocean began to close inexorably. The seaway between the converging continents narrowed until they collided and mountains were squeezed up in place of the vanished ocean. The two ancient continents, originally on opposite sides of the vast ocean, were now joined along a line known as the Iapetus Suture which runs almost parallel to Hadrian’s Wall.”

Cameron Explains Difference Between Scaremongering and Fear

Today David Cameron will be rocketed into Edinburgh to teach the Scots some lessons before the giant bungee cord attached to his back accelerates him safely back to London at speeds close to the speed of sound (but not higher as this would reduce the chances of hearing his parting words).

david-cameron

The Prime Minister will explain that there is not a shred of evidence for the claims of scaremongering made by the Yes Campaign.  Instead he will outline how Project Fear is quite a different beast altogether from scaremongering.  “Scare implies a short shock, like if I were to suddenly appear in your bedroom at night with a knife held between my teeth.  Contrast that to Fear which implies a longer lasting, simmering existential angst.  For example, if Scotland were to be independent then every single business including the baker at the end of your street would immediately pack up and move down to England.  And that the oil will run out in 40 years and then what are you going to do?  Or that aliens will attack Edinburgh the day after you get rid of Trident.  Or that you won’t ever get to watch Dr. Who again, not even on DVD. Yes that’s fear, dear Scots, and that’s what I am talking about.”

Independence and Business: Coca-Cola, IBM and Nazi Germany

There appears to be a steady stream of business people being wheeled out by the Better Togethers.  Their message is that if Scotland were to go it alone they’d seriously consider packing up their Scottish based business and marching south (How many would consider staying in Scotland? How many would consider moving to the continent if UK leaves the EU?).  More crap today from the Guardian and last week we had the rather predictable Standard Life scare story, which is basically an action replay of their 1997 threat just before the devolution referendum.  Then we heard from top gits at Shell and BP who would obviously consider moving their rigs to the Thames and a BP boss cleverly observing that “Great Britain is great.”  Oh, now that you put it like that, you’ve convinced me to drop this whole independence malarkey.

bplogo Standard_life_logo-colour Shell_logo

What is really at stake with these little scare stories?  Is it business or politics?  I’d strongly go with the latter.  The Conservatives increase the chances of independence every time one of their number opens their ignorant, pompous mouth.  Finally realizing this after the frankly embarrassing trip to Aberdeen the other week they’ve decided to get some of their mates in high places to begin issuing vague threats and make bullying noises on their behalf.

Does business really care?  Unless Scotland begins to nationalize every industry in sight or begins to tax businesses to the max, both of which I would consider very unlikely, the history of big business shows great indifference to the politics of a market.  Notoriously there are a number of famous companies that even continued to trade with Nazi Germany with IBM and Coca-Cola prime examples; IBM according to some providing the computing power to enable the Holocaust and Coca-Cola inventing Fanta for the wartime German market (strictly speaking Coca-Cola Germany was then separate from US parent).  These two companies were far from unique and such practices continue to this day.  Without the existence of Export Licenses you can be assured someone near you will be happily selling missile guidance systems to North Korea.

An independent Scotland that is almost assured of being wealthy, stable, with an educated and motivated workforce, and cash reserves to invest in infrastructure, is certainly not going to be any barrier to business.  Those that do leave will upon reflection more than likely not be missed and soon replaced as a (home-grown?) competitor steps in to fill the gap.  Such are the wonders of capitalism.

English Independence Anyone? Top Reasons…

Top reasons for England to want independence from Scotland.

  1. Scotland would vote for a goat if you pinned a red rosette to it.
  2. Scotland has had more than its fair share of MPs and ministers.
  3. Scots MPs can vote on English only laws.
  4. Scots are idiots having free higher education … everyone knows that the lower classes should be kept out or at least lumbered with massive debt. Keeps the poor in their place.
  5. Scots are embarrassing pro-European idiots … everyone knows that only the USA can be trusted.  And the European Union has ensured the longest period of piece in Western European recorded history.  Where’s the fun in that? We’re running out of time that we can still ride on the glory of World War II.  And that damn European Court of Human Rights really gets in the way of progress…
  6. Without nuclear weapons Scots will be unable to defend themselves against inevitable Godzilla attack. Don’t want to be associated with such spineless, utopian, skirt wearing people.
  7. Without nuclear power Scots will be a bunch of poodle walking, blouse wearing, flower sniffing, tree hugging…  Embarrassing to be associated with such people.
  8. Scots want an all inclusive, well funded health care system called the NHS. Everyone knows that an exclusive, expensive US style insurance based system is far more effective.
  9. Ayn Rand and Milton Friedman proved that trickle down liberalism is the only economic model that works.  The poor must be punished.  The bible says so.  The only Scot who understood this was Scotland’s own Adam Smith … after heavy re-interpreting and misreading.
  10. Thatcher proved that no civilized country has any need for a manufacturing base or for exports to exceed imports. Only requirements are a giant casino banking system (financial services) propping up the accounts and keeping the already wealthy rich.  Scot’s don’t understand this.
  11. Scotland supports any football team that is playing against England.  England vs Germany?  Becks beer half price and free bratwurst all round.
  12. The only thing that Scotland’s football team wins are Fairness Awards.  What the hell is that?  Best fans?  Who cares?  Scotland can’t even take on Johnny Foreigner effectively.
  13. Scots relegated their biggest football club to the Third Division just because they had some financial issues.  The powerful should be effectively shielded from the laws of commoners.
  14. Malcolm Tucker and Jamie McDonald.
  15. Oil is a disgusting substance that destroys the environment.

Schizophrenic Better Together on EU

Would the Better Together campaign please aim for some consistency? All these vague threats, typically without foundation, about no EU membership for Scotland, all aimed at creating fear in the Scottish voters. And then I switch on BBC World this morning and there is Merkel and Cameron strutting around with the German leader arguing that UK should not leave EU … which is a distinct possibility with the promised referendum in 2017.

merkel-cameron
So let’s get this straight – Scots are frightened into not voting for independence because of fears over no EU membership. It therefore stays in UK and in 2017 the majority of Scots vote to stay in EU, but we’re only 5 million out of 60 million so we leave the EU anyway …  How ironic.

No, the whole no EU membership for Scotland fear-mongering effort is without any substance and yet another pathetic, antidemocratic disgrace.

NoScotland’s Leaked Plans for Scotland

I recently came across a better together campaign called “NoScotland“.  You could not get a more negative effort than that, could you? I mean that’s sure to motivate people to want to stay part of the UK!  Trying to make sense of what NoScotland actually meant, I quickly scanned the entire interweb and the leaked NSA files and came up with these blue-prints for a “NoScotland”.

Scottish Independence and Denmark: Less Natural Resources but GDP #6

When considering Scottish independence it’s worth keeping an eye on Denmark.  Similar population size, about half the area and sitting at number 6 in the list of countries ranked by GDP per capita.  Denmark has an extremely high standard of living and adheres to the liberal, egalitarian Scandinavian model.  In terms of natural resources Scotland has Denmark well and truly beaten.  Denmark has an output of around 94 million barrels of oil per year against 656 million barrels for Scotland.  Both countries have lots of wind, but beyond that Scotland has hydro-power and holds far more potential for wave and tidal. Denmark has a lot of pigs, I believe.

Husumer_Protest_Eberferkel denmark

Clever labour laws going under the term “Flexicurity“, high standards of education and investment in research and technology keep Denmark competitive.  And contrary to the unfair, immoral, neo-con insanity in so many countries Denmark does all this with a generous welfare state, an inclusive health care system and the lowest level of inequality in the world.  The winner takes all, punish the poor model of the UK and the USA does not work and only “benefits” a small percentage.  I put the word benefits in quotes because only the blind and selfish can be pleased with their own success while so many countrymen suffer.

Whether Scotland can match Denmark’s success is therefore down to the will of the people.  Scotland has historically shown a will to promote fairness and equality with strong commitment to free higher education and a well funded NHS.  For Scotland to fail as an independent land would take a high level of incompetence and/or corruption. Given the frightening state of the UK economy and the possibility of a vote to leave the EU in 2017, the state of the UK could diminish further in a slide towards the further economic ruin as exporters get hit by EU import taxes, the most deprived regions miss out on current EU funding and human rights goes out the window completely.
